A pioneering Aberdeen software company will unveil its latest energy industry innovation at a prestigious international conference later this month (April).
Motion Software is showcasing its MI2 product, which captures data at the point of inspection, at the 15th North Sea Cranes and Lifting event at Aberdeen’s Exhibition and Conference Centre.
The conference and exhibition attracts some of the most influential players in the offshore lifting and materials handling sector – a key audience for Motion’s latest development which offers a safer, more efficient and cost-effective inspections solution.
Motion Software’s inspections toolkit is already used by lifting inspection industry workers and the company has now pioneered hand-held devices to capture data on site – even in hazardous zones offshore.
Motion, which offers bespoke and customised software, has also highlighted its expertise to the globally-recognised industry body LEEA, the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association and SAFed, the Safety Assessment Federation. And Microsoft has tested and approved the MI2 for the oil and gas industry.
Stephen Burt, Managing Director of Motion Software, said: “We recognised that swift, accurate inspection data is a vital business requirement and looked at how we could capture that information on-the-spot as inspections were being carried out.
“These devices were have been piloted and brought to the marketplace where they are being used by a number of engineers, across multiple platforms, in the North Sea’s UK sector .”
Such work must comply with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and the advantage of Motion Software’s mobile devices is that data, which traditionally was paper-based or had to be logged on a separate computer at a later date, can now be input during inspection, helping to streamline the compliance process.
This had proved impossible in certain offshore zones where using computers constitutes an explosive risk but Motion has developed the tool for use in ATEX environments 1 and 2, where equipment must comply with a European directive covering work in explosive environments.
The hand-held range includes a five-hour battery with a fast two-hour charger time. Some devices incorporate a camera and the system also has modules for dropped object and pipe inspections. Other functions include radio frequency tagging and a touch-screen version.
“This solution integrates with a company’s existing IT set-up and allows clients to capitalise on the benefits of mobile computing,” said Mr Burt. “You don’t have to duplicate energy and time to go back to the office and key in the data because it has been acquired at the point of inspection.
“Our software manages the process of working on and offline as the engineer, away from the office in a remote location, can synchronise with and talk to the office. When it comes back through the approval process the reports are published on the web where the customer can see them and can monitor the status of their assets and be informed of any equipment issues within hours.”
Mr Burt added: “It makes the whole process safer, more labour-saving, efficient and cost-effective. We are trying to make a difference and develop best practice by giving people better tools to work with.
“Although we pioneered them for use in the energy industry, we believe there is huge scope to use these devices in a range of other industries which require the inspection and certification of lifting equipment, including cranes and containers.”
Motion Software, based at Grandholm Crescent, will be exhibiting at Stand 20B at the event at the AECC between April 27 and 29. For more information on Motion Software’s products, email Stephen@Motionsoftware.co.uk or log on to www.motionsoftware.co.uk.

Commitment to training
Aberdeen-based Motion Software says its continuing commitment to training has played a key role in its growing success, as the company enjoys its busiest period since it was founded.
Motion Managing Director Stephen Burt said encouraging staff to identify and achieve their learning and career goals has been fundamental to attracting and retaining the calibre of staff necessary to handle a range of ambitious and creative projects.
Its most recent training achievement came as three staff completed a set of punishing technical exams, leading the company to become the first in the North of Scotland qualified to offer Microsoft Business Intelligence (BI) solutions.
Motion was last year awarded gold-certified status from Microsoft in recognition of its innovative implementation of its technology, and can now add BI to the range of solutions it can offer at Gold Partner level.
Business Intelligence complements the services already on offer, and promises clients an instant overview of their business, delivering instant and real-time access to information from a whole range of data sources.
The company has already delivered a data warehousing and report builder solution to a major oil services company giving them direct and virtually immediate access to detailed data stored in up to six disparate databases.
Stephen said: “An ongoing commitment to training is a key element of our support to staff, and I think is vital for any company to attract and retain the right people.
“We work with our staff to identify their learning objectives on a regular basis and look at how they can best achieve that. We also encourage staff to pass on knowledge they’ve gained, through formal training or previous experience, so the company as a whole can benefit.”
He said staff can take part in formal training courses or ‘bootcamps’ such as the intensive eight-day Microsoft BI training, which represent a considerable investment for the company.
Training issues such as handling new technology and understanding the commercial side of the business are being tackled in-house. As the company grows, more staff members are being encouraged to train in leadership skills, to allow management to be delegated.
Stephen added: “We’ve increased our training budget year-on-year to ensure that we are not only offering the latest software knowledge and expertise to our customers, but also that our staff are gaining additional knowledge to help them develop within their role, and as part of an organisation.
“We’re particularly pleased with the success with Business Intelligence as we believe it will give us access to a large and exciting new market, opening up new challenges for staff and opportunities for the company as a whole.”
Stephen said: “Skilled and motivated staff are crucial to any business, and we aim to support those staff by providing a good working environment, challenging and varied projects and the encouragement to take part in ongoing professional development.
“Good training works both ways – it provides the individual with a better understanding of particular technologies or skills, giving them increased work satisfaction. And it strengthens our bond with our employees, helping us to maintain their loyalty and retain good staff.”
